For today, I thought I would talk about a song by Garbage entitled, "Only Happy When It Rains." Even if you never look beyond the title, that song fits my attitude toward writing perfectly. For most of us, writing is an escape from stressful, complicated, or even mundane "everyday life." I never feel better than after I have made a writing goal and actually carried it out. There is something so gratifying about knowing that I filled that blank page: that the words covering it are there because I put them there. While I may not always be able to control what my characters say or how they react to things, the stories I write are, essentially, in my hands. Sometimes, I even do best when I have no idea what I'm going to write, but I have mentioned that before.
So, stop waiting for the world to slow down: write right now. Get the words on paper. It doesn't need to be perfect; it doesn't even need to be good. It can be downright terrible. The point is that you get some part of yourself in writing. Release your imprisoned soul and let it pour out onto the pages. What have you got to lose, really? Write for yourself and you'll never disappoint.
